OBC Postmatric Scholarship:

Postmatric scholarship for OBCs introduced by the Govt. of India during 1999-2000. The scheme was implemented in the state only during 2010-11 and it was restricted to higher secondary courses only. Under this scheme, OBC students whose annual family income not exceeds ` 1,00,000 (One lakh only), studying in Govt/Aided institutions are eligible to get monthly stipend @ 160 for 10 months, actual course fees and all mandatory fees admissible. At present, the scheme is implemented by SC Development Department through E Grantz system. The online applications can be registered through Akshaya Centres without any payment.

A long lasting dream of the Backward Communities of Kerala comes true when the Government of Kerala created a separate department for them to deal the issues related to the social and educational progression of backward communities in Kerala, in the form of planning and implementing welfare schemes. Though the substantial force of OBC community covers over 65% of the total state population, the mass of the community still remains as one of the disadvantaged and marginalized sections of the society.

This is the much discussed issue in the state. Since the advancement of Kerala directly or indirectly linked with the evolution of the OBC Communities in the state, the Govt of Kerala settled on the most essential decision to shape up a separate department for the community and definitely it will remain judged as a remarkable step from the part of the Govt of Kerala in the days to come.

The Backward Communities Development Department formed in Kerala w.e.f 19/11/2011 and its Directorate has been competent to function since 21/11/2012, with skeleton staffs including the Director. Two regional offices at Ernakulam and Kozhikkode will be opening shortly.
