Every winter, the Class V toppers of government schools prepare and participate in the scholarship entrance test and the best 200 among them are selected on merit basis. The scheme started with an initial intake of 50 students but now, the scholarship has been enhanced to 200 students.

The scheme is basically a ticket to the Sikkimese students, many of whom are from underprivileged families studying in government schools for better and quality education in reputed public schools in and outside Sikkim with the full expenses borne by the State government. The scheme is also one of the early milestones of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) government in its fourth term.

As per the incentive, a cash award of Rs. 1 lakh each would be given to Class XII students who top the State in Science, Humanities, Commerce and Vocational subjects. Cash awards of Rs. 75,000 and Rs. 50,000 would be given to each student who secures second and third positions in the four subjects.

The top three Class X students would be rewarded with Rs. 1 lakh, Rs. 75,000 and Rs. 50,000 respectively.

The cash awards not only offer an additional motivation for the students but also facilitate them in pursuing higher education courses they want.
